Instruction for applying for a Thai E-Passport

1. General Information and requirements

1. An electronic passport has an embedded electronic microprocessor chip which contains bio-metric information i.e. photo, iris and fingerprints that can be used to verify the identity of the passport holder.
2. To apply for a Thai E-passport, therefore, the applicant needs to come in person to the Royal Thai Embassy, Stockholm.
3. The applicant must have a Thai citizenship and be a resident of Sweden or Latvia. The applicant can apply for a new Thai E-passport if the old one is expired, destroyed or damaged, or if the applicant’s name has been changed.  
4. After the application, the processing time take about 4-6 weeks. Please plan your travel accordingly. 
5. There is no fine or any additional cost for an expired passport.
6. New rules and regulations effective since 11 March 2021;
    6.1 A person of a legal age (20 years or older) or under a legal age but is legally married can apply for a Thai E-passport with 5 or 10-year validity. However, if it is the first time that the applicant applies a Thai E-passport aboard the applicant is not registered in a house registration in Thailand the applicant can only apply for a Thai E- passport with 5-year validity.
    6.2 A person under legal age (below 20 years old) can only apply for a Thai E-passport with 5-year validity.
7. If your Thai ID-card is expired, lost or damaged, please make an online booking to renew the Thai ID-card before booking a time for a Thai E-passport appointment.
8. In case of a name change (i.e. married or divorced), please contact a district office (Amphoe) in Thailand to change your name before applying for a Thai E-passport at the Embassy.  
9. If the applicant is not of a legal age (below 20 years old), he/she must be accompanied by both parents to apply for a Thai E-passport at the Embassy. If one parent cannot come to the Embassy, the other parent need to present a certified power of attorney (PoA). If the parents are divorced or not legally married, the parent needs to show proof of sole custody issued by a district office (Amphoe) in Thailand.
10. If the applicant was born abroad and/or his/her name is not under the Thai house registration, the applicant can only apply for a Thai E-passport for only 5-year validity. After receiving the first Thai E-passport, the applicant must register his/her name in the house registration in Thailand before being able to submit another application at the Embassy. 
11. If the applicant is of legal age (20 years or older), the applicant must show a valid Thai ID card when submitting the application. (The first Thai ID-card can only be issued at the district office, (Amphoe) in Thailand.
12. Fees for Thai E-passport:
          5-year validity   - 350 SEK
         10-year validity  - 500 SEK
         Payable by Swish only.
13. Please note that your photo will be taken and your fingerprints collected during the application process. Sunglasses or dark glasses, coloured contact lenses, eyelash extensions, bright hair dye or nail extensions are not permitted.
14. If the applicant does not pick up the new Thai E-passport within 90 days of the stamped date attached to the application receipt, the Royal Thai Embassy reserves the right to cancel and void the new Thai E-passport (as per the rules and regulations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs). If the applicant wishes to make a new Thai E-passport, the application process will be started from the beginning and a new fee applies.
15. Please prepare all the required documents before your appointment. Please note that there is no copying or printing service available at the Embassy.
16. For an Emergency Passport (EP) or Emergency Travel Document (ETD) application. Please contact the Royal Thai Embassy, Stockholm: Passport division at +46 8 588 04255 (14.00-16.00 hrs. working days). The applicant must present a valid ticket or travel reservation and explain the reasons for emergency travel.

The Royal Thai Embassy reserves the right to deny any application that does not meet the requirements.

 

2. Required Documents

2.1 Requirements for adults (20 years or older)

3. A passport and one copy of the photo page.
4. A valid Thai ID card and one copy if the Thai ID card is expired or lost, please make an appointment online to renew a Thai ID card first on our website.
Please note that a Thai ID card will be issued within 30 minutes after applications. Thus, an appointment to make a Thai ID card must be booked before an appointment for a Thai E-passport application. Those who wish to apply for the first ID card must contact and submit an application at the district office (Amphoe) in Thailand only.
5. Fees for Thai E-passport:
          5-years validity    - 350 SEK
          10-years validity  - 500 SEK
          Payable by Swish only at the Embassy after completion of the application process.
6. If the applicant withes to receives the E-passport by post, a return envelope must be prepared. 
   There are 2 options available (6.1 or 6.2), both requiring the applicant to prepare a C5 envelope to be submitted at the time of the application.
    6.1 Pre-registered, pre-paid REK (Rekommenderat brev) mail purchased online only from postnord.se (You cannot buy return REK envelop at the post ombord, Ej KONTANTBETALD ) A return REK envelop must be INTERETBETALD only!
        - Visit www.postnord.se 
        - Click “Köp frakt online”
        - Choose “REK”
        - Choose “maxvikt 100g (111 SEK)”
        - Fill in “Avsändare”:

        - Fill in “Mottagare” name and address.
        - Print out the label and put it on a C5 size envelope.

6.2 Purchase stamps with a value of 141 SEK (for register 100 gram) and put them on a C5 size envelope marked with your return name, address and telephone number.

Note:     1. Please prepare one return envelope per one passport 
              2. Please do not purchase the REK mail more than 10 days before the appointment as the REK mail label is only valid for 2 months from the date of purchase.
              3. Please do not write a child’s name on the return envelope as the registered recipient has to be an adult of legal age. Please use the parent's or guardian’s name and address.

7. Additional documents.
     7.1 If the applicant’s name/last name is not the same as that on the old passport and the valid Thai ID card, a copy of the certificate proving a the change of name/last name, issued by a district office (Amphoe) in Thailand is required.
     7.2 If the applicant’s name/last name in the house registration is not the same as as that the old passport or the valid Thai ID card, a copy of the house registration is required.
     7.3 If the old passport is still valid but is lost or stolen, a copy of the relevant police report is required.

2.2 Requirements for minors (under 20 years old)

2.2.1 Required documents for minors.

3. A Thai passport and one copy of the photo page (except when applying for the first Thai passport)
4. A Swedish passport and one copy of the photo page (if available)
5. A copy of a Thai birth certificate
6. A valid Thai ID card and one copy (if available)
If a Thai ID card is expired or lost, please make an appointment online to renew a Thai ID card first on our website.
Please note that the Thai ID card will be issued within 30 minnutes after application. Thus, an appointment to make a Thai ID card must be booked before an appointment for a Thai E-passport application. Those who wish to apply for the first ID-card must contact and submit an application at the district office (Amphoe) in Thailand only.
7. A copy of the applicant’s Thai house registration (Tabien Bann) (Except when applying for the first Thai passport)
8. 350 SEK fee payable by Swish only at the Embassy after completion of the application process. 
9. If the applicant wishes to receive the E-passport by post, a return envelope must also be prepared.
There are 2 options available (9.1 or 9.2), both requiring the applicant to prepare a C5 envelope to be submitted at the time of the application.
    9.1 Pre-registered, pre-paid REK (Rekommenderat brev) mail purchased online only from postnord.se (You cannot buy return REK envelop at the post ombord, Ej KONTANTBETALD ) A return REK envelop must be INTERETBETALD only!

    9.2 Purchase stamps with a value of 141 SEK (for register 100 gram) and put them on a C5 size envelope marked with your return name, address and telephone number.

Note:

              2. Please do not purchase the REK mail more than 10 days before the appointment as the REK mail label is only valid for 2 months from the date of purchase.
              3. Please do not write a child’s name on the return envelope as the registered recipient has to be an adult of legal age. Please use the parent's or guardian’s name and address.

 

2.2.2 Required documents for parents with a shared custody

  1. A valid Thai ID-card of parent(s) and one copy
  2. A Thai passport of parent(s) and one copy of the photo page
  3. For a non-Thai parent: A valid passport and a driving license or National ID card and one copy of each document
  4. Both a father and a mother must sign a consent form in person in front of the officer at the time of application. If one parent is not present, a letter of consent issued by a district office (Amphoe) in Thailand not older than 90 days is required, together with a signed copy of that parent’s Thai ID card.
  5. The Royal Thai Embassy reserves the right to request for additional documents if deemed necessary.

2.2.3 Required documents for a parent with a sole custody (Divorced or not legally married)

  1. A valid Thai ID card of parent and one copy
  2. A Thai passport of the parent and one copy
  3. Documents authorisinga  sole custody, which can be one of the following;
    3.1 In case that the parents have never been legally married, the parent with a sole custody must present relevant documents from Thailand (Por Kor 14).
    3.2 In case that the parents are divorced, the parent with a sole custody must present a divorce certificate from Thailand. 
    3.3 In case that one parent is deceased: A death certificate from Thailand must be presented with one copy. A Swedish death certificate has to be legalized and translated into Thai.
    3.4 In case that Thai parent and a foreign parent are divorced (relevant documents are not available in Thai): If a sole custody has been awarded to one of the parents by a Swedish/Latvian court order, the relevant documents have to be; 
           (1) legalized by the Swedish/Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Utrikesdepartementet, UD)
           (2) translated into Thai
           (3) legalized the translated documents at the Royal Thai Embassy, Stockholm
    3.5 Adopted child: an adoption certificate must be presented by the legal guardian.

Note:
- The Royal Thai Embassy reserves the right to request anny additional documents if deemed necessary.
- Relevant documents in a foreign languages (non-Thai) such as a divorce certificate, court order, death certificate and adoption certificate etc. must be translated into Thai and legalized by the Royal Thai Embassy before making an appointment for the Thai E-passport application.

 

 

 

 

 

 3. How to pick up your new Thai E-passport.

3.1 Your new Thai E-passport is prepared in Thailand and will be sent to the Royal Thai Embassy when finished. The processing time takes 4-6 weeks after application.
3.2 The applicant can choose how to  pick up a new Thai E-passport at the Royal Thai Embassy, Stockholm or have it sent to address in Sweden by providing a pre-paid return envelope.

To pick up a new Thai E-passport at the Royal Thai Embassy, please come on the specified on the paper attached to the application receipt, normally Friday 14.00-16.00 hrs.
Note: If the applicant does not pick up a new Thai E-passport within 90 days of the date specified on the paper attached to the application receipt, the Royal Thai Embassy reserves the right to cancel and void your new Thai E-passport (as per the rules and regulations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand). If the applicant wishes to make a new Thai E-passport, he/she needs to make a new application and a new fee applies.

3.3 How to prepare a return envelope: two options are available         
      1. Pre-registered, pre-paid REK (Rekommenderat brev) mail purchased online only from postnord.se (You cannot buy return REK envelop at the post ombord, Ej KONTANTBETALD ) A return REK envelop must be INTERETBETALD only!
